Food Rules: An Eater's Manual Review

It is amazing how complicated we have allowed our diets, and our understanding of our diets, to become. Even Pollan's most recent book In Defense of Food: An Eaters Manifesto - which seemed to be a pretty simple premise - ended up being a (wonderfully) complicated journey through our food system. So when I read that this book was coming out, I wondered if it was necessary given the wealth of information already covered. The answer is: yes, this book is necessary.
While there are a million other guides to a healthy diet running around out there, few manage to boil down the essentials in such a usable way. Pollan takes the essential and fascinating information that he wrote about in his previous book and simmers it down into a succinct (the book is basically 70 half pages long) "manual" of rules for eating. While this book retains some of the bones of its predecessor, it is by no means a Cliff's Notes version. This manual is essential reading all on its own.
Food Rules is broken down into 3 sections (and this will sound familiar to those that read In Defense of Food): 1- What should I eat? (Eat food) 2 - What kind of food should I eat? (Mostly plants) and 3 - How should I eat? (Not too much). Each section includes 20 or so rules that you can pick and choose from in order to eat a healthy diet. Some of the rules overlap (Avoid food products that contain ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce and Avoid ingredients that no ordinary human would keep in the pantry, for instance) and some seem like such common sense that it is almost laughable to include them, but that is why this manual is so important. It distills all of this complex information that we see and hear every day and turns it into something relatable. We know, somewhere in our minds, that certain grains and oils are better than others. Pollan gives us an easy rule to help know which ones are best. We know that most breakfast cereals are little more than desserts and Pollan gives us an easy rule to know which ones are safe. Some rules are humorous (it's not food if it arrived through the window of your car) and some are serious; some rules are easy and others require a bit more dedication. But what this manual has is a wide range of useful tips that can be applied to any life at any time. This is no complicated diet; this is a little pocket book of sensible, realistic rules to help you eat your best.

Anticancer, A New Way of Life, New Edition Review

It came as a total shock when I found out I had a brain tumor in October, 2009. I am a non-smoker, a vegetarian, I've always been slim and exercise most days. I'd seen this book before my diagnosis and thought it looked good, but didn't buy it. Thought I didn't need it.
Once I realized the author also had a brain tumor and has been able to keep it in check for over 15 years through diet and other means, I knew this was the book for me. If you want to learn how to do something, go to someone who has done it! So I bought the book. It's an easy read and is backed up by scientific research and 28 pages of footnotes in case you want to learn more. The book is very specific in its recommendations.
I took the plunge around Christmas, 2009 and have been following the diet ever since. I underwent a year of chemotherapy treatments at the same time. Every three months I have an MRI and each time the news gets better! What was a slow growing, inoperable tumor has become a fast shrinking one instead.
Reading this book and changing what I eat has been incredibly empowering for me. I thought I knew a lot about nutrition before, but I learned some important things from Dr. Servan-Schreiber:
- Good oils to use (olive and canola)
- Spices to add (garlic, ginger, turmeric)
- Vegetables to eat daily (broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, all cabbages)
I also learned some sobering facts about sugar (see page 61):
"The German biologist Otto Heinrick Warburg won the Nobel Prize in medicine for his discovery that the metabolism of malignant tumors is largely dependent on glucose consumption. (Glucose is the form of digested sugar in the body.) In fact the PET scan commonly used to detect cancer simply measures the areas in the body that consume the most glucose. If a particular area stands out because it consumes too much sugar, cancer is very likely the cause."
I never thought I could kick the sugar habit, but after the first two weeks it wasn't hard. I found substitutes to feed my sweet tooth - berries, fruits, cinnamon, stevia, and baker's chocolate (which is unsweetened) with any of the above. It's not rocket science. You just need to decide what you want and then make the changes to get there.

Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight Review

Two of us have been following this plan for over 1.5 years. My partner lost about 20 pounds in the first few months, without counting portions or calories, and has maintained his ideal weight without effort. His energy returned to a level not experienced for several years - one of the keys was putting MODERATE amounts of organic beef back into his diet. Eliminating wheat, dairy products and foods with problematic lectins, while emphasizing beneficial foods such as leafy dark-green vegetables also helped. Since he's Type O and I'm Type A, the protein part of our diets differs somewhat, but we've quite easily found ways to cook together. We both noticed much clearer sinuses after just a week. He eliminated asthma symptoms and my allergies improved. I no longer suffer from PMS. I lived with knee problems since childhood, but these have now disappeared, as did the stiffness in my fingers and back in the morning. Digestive problems and stomach aches, a major problem for me since childhood, eased greatly in the first couple of months and are still improving. My complexion cleared and my heart stopped "skipping beats" - I could go on and on.
I have been interested in nutrition and have kept abreast of various schools of thought for the last 25 years. When I first heard of Eat Right I dismissed it as a fad diet that was not based on scientific evidence. Before reading Eat Right I consumed what I believed were "healthy" foods for many years: whole grains, little or no meat, lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, legumes, "good" fats, spring water. Very few additives, prepared or fast foods or medications. However, some foods that were healthy according to the literature and research were healthy for other blood types but not for Type A. When I eliminated these foods and ate more of the beneficial foods I immediately saw results.
I just read most of Live Right 4 Your Type and highly recommend it. Eat Right 4 Your Type was a great introduction, but it's several years old and much research has taken place since then. For someone new to the eating plan, reading both books would be helpful. The information in Live Right is more current, more specific for individuals and a little more technical. Beyond food recommendations, Live Right's information about cortisol and stress was very useful for me.
Read the reviews of people who have actually tried the eating plan, then try it for a month and decide yourself!

Gluten Free On a Shoestring is very easy to follow..Nicole explains everything and makes it seem so easy to bake. I baked her Pound Cake and my husband (who does not need to eat gf) said he couldnt tell the difference. Nicole is witty, smart and clever. Focaccia in the crockpot? Pimento cheezy dip? Recipes look easy, and low-fat healthy. I grow tired of slow-cooker recipes that require a saute prior to cooking. What's the point of the slow-cooker if I gotta cook before cooking? I ordered the book even though I'm in the middle of a move. I'll actually have to pack it in a box as soon as I get it. I just received this yesterday, so I haven't made any of the recipes yet. The book is stuffed full with timely, relevant info about leading a vegan lifestyle - vegan cooking/foods, vegan clothes and footwear, lists of vegan cosmetics companies on the Web, etc. Oh, and crafts, too! All presented in an attractive and fun format. I'm 44 and not all that hip, :), but I really like this book so far, a lot more than I thought I would. It's more like a little reference book for vegans. I wish I had this book 3 yrs ago when I first went vegan. The recipes look great, too, can't wait to try them. I bought Rocco's Now Eat This book last year. The recipes were so amazing that I started losing 3 pounds a week! The reason I could stay on this diet was because with Rocco's recipes, I felt like I was still eating my favorite foods - burgers, mac and cheese, fried chicken, brownies etc. I love that Rocco came out with Now Eat This Diet because it really helps me put together daily meal plans. No more guess work, I just simply combine what recipes I like best for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This book also has EVEN MORE recipes of my favorite comfort foods. There are a ton of photos in the book which come in handy when I am unsure whether I am making the dishes properly. The layout of the book is also good and very easy to follow. I bought this book at Walmart (paid a lot more for it there) and it was completely worth it. So far, I have tried a half dozen of the recipes, and ALL of them have been a huge success. One reviewer rights about how it is only restraunt selections..... false. At the bottom of each ORIGINAL recipe in here, they show what a restaurant alternative is, and how much money and calories you save by cooking at home. Also helpful in this book is new cooking tips and techniques. For example, as a southerner - I love fried foods. This book showed me how to "oven fry" foods to have that familiar taste and crispy outside without all the extra calories from submerging foods in hot grease. Other techniques in this book that have been helpful are how to braise meats and use the natural drippings to make your own sauces while cooking, increasing the natural flavor of dishes.

Deceptively Delicious VS.The Sneaky Chef
First of all let me start by saying:
!) I don't have young kids any more BUT
2) I HATE veggies but I know I need to eat more of them, so any system that gets them into me and the grownups in my life: BRAVO!
Yes, I'd recommend BOTH books and here's why. They each have their strong and weak suits.
Pluses:
DECEPTIVELY DELICIOUS has
A) pictures, which is helpful and fun
B) tips and comments by her taste-testers
C) used one type of puree for each recipe
D) is spiral bound so it will lay flat. The whole layout is really nice, just as a cookbook to read!
E) doesn't beat you over the head with the whole nutrition thing
THE SNEAKY CHEF has
A) combination purees, which add a lot of variety and ease into the cooking part
B0 really cute names for the dishes. Makes it easy to remember!
C) isn't afraid to use butter and milk!
D) goes seriously into the nutrition thing. Almost the first half of the book is a prelim and explanation of the whole concept.
E) the recipes seem to taste a bit better!
Minuses:
DD. The recipes are a bit bland. If you're cooking for an adult palate, you need to add more spices. For example her "Chocolate Chip Cupcakes." I suggest substituting milk (even skim) for the water, add an extra T. vanilla and 1-2 teaspoons of cinnamon. One of the veggie purees her recipes call for aren't covered in the "how to prepare puree" part.
SC: Very few pictures. It's not spiral bound but a trip to Office Max can take care of that for you. (Best tip I ever got regarding cookbooks by the way and found it here!) It's a bit "textbook" like. I get the whole nutrition thing already.
I wish both books went into greater detail about the pureeing part. They're pretty good but if you're not a veggie person to begin with, you might not know what is the proper consistency.
I understand that Missy (The Sneaky Chef author) is writing a cookbook for adult with hidden veggies and I hope Jessica will do the same!

I have this cookbook well stained with use! The soups, salads, entrees and yes the Carrotcake with cream cheese frosting, are wonderful! I would recommend this book to all no matter if they are vegan, not a vegan or have health issues. I have even incorperated many of the recipes into the meals of my still meat eating family, and yes, they love them also!
I will state that after I started following Ornish's program, I have lost over 20 pounds!

I've been a vegan for 8 years, and for the last 7.9 or so of those years, I've been an unabashed and exuberant vegan advocate.
The problem is I've always had difficulty identifying that "one book" I would want to give to someone who, for one reason or another, has become interested in veganism and a compassionate lifestyle. For the spiritual, I might recommend Will Tuttle's "The World Peace Diet". For animal lovers, perhaps Gail Eisnitz's unflinching "Slaughterhouse" is the way to go. For someone health-focused, I might recommend something by Barnard or Esselstyn or McDougall. If I didn't know the veg-curious person that well... well, you can't go too wrong with something by John Robbins, right?
But no more. There is a single book that I can recommend anyone, and that book is "The 30-Day Vegan Challenge".
What a beautiful and astonishing book this is. I was lucky enough to get a copy two days before the rest of the world at book's release party in San Francisco, and I devoured it in two days. It's all here: the health arguments, the environmental arguments, and, of course, the arguments on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves. Oh, and there are the recipes. The recipes are a "greatest hits" collection from Colleen's previous (awesome) cookbooks, and they're fantastic.
But delicious "vegan food" is easy. The hard work is in the arguing, and in the convincing, and in the hand holding, and in the encouraging of those who are just beginning their more compassionate path - the path upon which they align their values with their actions. And that is where this book excels. Colleen answers every objection, every question, and every excuse that any vegan has ever heard, and she does it swiftly and conclusively. It's a wonder to witness. If you're vegan, play a little game and count the number of times when you say to yourself, "Wow. She nailed that."
More importantly, if you're not vegan (yet), play a little game and count the number of times when you say to yourself, "Wow. She nailed that."

I like "Appetite for Reduction" because the author gives nutrition info for each recipe which is a first and unlike her other books. It is also a more health conscious collection of recipes and is exactly what I've been waiting for. I own all of Isa's & Terry's other books and I guess I would consider myself a fan by now. I usually stick to a healthy and nutritious diet under a certain number of calories per day, and I had to choose carefully which recipes I'm making in their previous books. But looking through "Appetite for Reduction," there really are no questionable recipes for those who wish to eat healthy. Everything is healthy here, and it doesn't skimp on flavor at all. I'm marinating the tofu from one of the new recipes right now...Masala Baked Tofu. Very simple and I can't wait to taste it!

Crock Pot Cookbook: 440 Slow Cooker Recipes Review

My neighbor moved and left me a crock pot and being a man I had no idea what to do with it. But with the help of the "Crock Pot Cookbook" I have turned my kitchen into a feast good enough for Julia Child. The easy to use table of contents makes it convenient to find your next hot and down home meal.
I've already tried a couple of recipes and my family was delighted. I checked for other books by R. Wilson and found "Heart Healthy Cooking", "Quick & Easy Meals", and "Ultimate Toaster Oven Cookbook". Now I've got hundreds of recipes on my Kindle for 4 dollars!

Crock Pot Cookbook: 440 Slow Cooker Recipes Overview

I wanted a crock pot recipe book for my Kindle so I went to Amazon and found several books containing "470 Crock Pot Recipes". It was pretty obvious that people found something on the internet for free and put it on Amazon to sell, but for only 99 cents I figured there wasn't much to lose so I bought one. Turned out to be totally useless. There was no table of contents and there were two or three blank pages between each recipe. That meant a lot of clicking on the Kindle just to see what's there. I didn't bother trying to click through all the recipes - I was afraid I'd wear out my little clicker. Instead, I went to google and immediately found what people were downloading, a .pdf file with 470 recipes in alphabetical order. Hence "Artichoke Chicken and Olives" was next to "Artichoke and Cheese Dip" but if you want to browse all the chicken recipes you're out of luck. So I converted this .pdf file to something I could work with and proceeded to reorganize the recipes into categories and build a table of contents. Now if you've got a chicken sitting in your fridge screaming at you to do something before it gets too old you can go to the "Chicken and Turkey" section of the table of contents and scan through the titles or click on the first one and start glancing at the recipes until you find something that strikes your fancy. I also standardized the recipe formats and abbreviations and included a little information about converting the U.S. measurements for those of you that have advanced on to the metric system and now only use teaspoons for stirring your tea. Some of these recipes mention brand name products. If those products aren't available where you are you're just going to have to call me bad names and either wing it or try another recipe. There are plenty of recipes that only call for natural and/or fresh ingredients though. Revised: 30 August 2011

Meeting Lindsay on Twitter shortly after deciding to go Vegan was one of the best things that ever happened to me and I was really excited when Lindsay chose me to be one of her testers for this cookbook. Newly vegan I wasn't sure where to start. Lindsay introduced me to new foods with her creative, easy, few ingredient recipes.
I thought Chickpeas were something you sprinkled on salads at the salad bar but Lindsay has some really tasty recipes with them. I used to make Tofu Scramble with tofu, oil and a box mix. No oil, some tofu and a few spices add up to the best Tofu Scramble I've ever had. Make French Toast without eggs? Lindsay does and it is better than the real thing. Home fries without the fat? Lindsay has it! The BBQ Chop Wrap is one of my favorite all time recipes. I make the single serving brownie almost every week! And don't get me started on her Pumpkin Pie...
Recently I discovered that I can't tolerate Gluten and also had to cut back on Soy - Lindsay's book has many recipes that I enjoy.
Giving up all the fat for flavorful food cleared up my skin and helped me lose weight while feeling good.
I highly recommend Lindsay's book for anyone who enjoys food.

Green Smoothie Revolution: The Radical Leap Towards Natural Health Review

I loved Michael Pollan's book "In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto" in which he summed up his research into what we should really be eating by saying "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." I then thought, O-K, that's great advice but how do I do that? Salads?
Victoria Boutenko's book answers my question so completely that you would think that she was wondering the same thing. Many of the plants that are the healthiest for you (the dark green types) are difficult to eat raw in any meaningful quantity; kale, mustard greens, spinach, collard greens, etc. This is why so many people either cook them to death or smoother them with high calorie dressings. The Green Smoothie Revolution book showed me how I could add all of things that I believe are healthy for us (leaves, fruit, and berries) to my diet in an easy and fun way.
I was introduced to the Green Smoothie by a friend who had been eating this way for a while. I have to admit that when I made my first one I looked at it and said "Really?" It looked like something that Yoda, the swamp dwelling Jedi master from the Star Wars movies, would eat. Green, thick and kind of bubbling. I pride myself on my cooking abilities, especially in making a dish look appetizing by skillful plating. This did not look good; as a matter of fact my other friends used quite a few "colorful" expressions to describe my concoctions, none of which are appropriate here. The taste however is an entirely different matter. The simple blend of bananas, strawberries and kale was sweet, earthy and fresh. I was hooked!
In addition to the wonderful recipes for green smoothies (with alluring names such as "Hawaiian Hibiscus", "The Laughing Gorilla" and "Green Monkey Face") the book also offers moving testimonials and, most importantly, sage advice from Mrs. Boutenko. I have grown to really enjoy mustard greens as a part of my smoothie meals but she gives a great reason to "rotate" your choice of greens. It seems many plants have ingredients in them (including alkaloids) that could become slightly toxic if eaten in large quantities in order to encourage animals to vary their diet so that the plant would not be eaten to extinction. By regularly changing my choice of greens I can avoid this problem as each plant has a different chemical make-up. Another thing that surprised me is that pets enjoy this type of food as much as people do.
I will have to admit that I am not planning to eat 100% raw foods. I believe that humans are omnivores and that a varied diet is a good thing. However, I feel much better now that I have made my daily Green Smoothie my major meal of the day. I still enjoy my cheeses, breads, butter (I LOVE good, cultured Vermont butter) and meat, but I am eating much less of each of them. Thanks to a great friend and this book I have finally learned a practical way to "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

My wife and I run a paleo home kitchen. This book is a fantastic addition to our growing list of paleo/primal recipes. What specifically makes this book such a big win is the layout and generous use of quality pictures. Every recipe is accompanied by an ingredient list, a nutrient list, clearly written (not overly verbose) instructions, and perhaps what my wife and I appreciate the most, a picture of the ingredients and a picture of the finished product. This book was not just thrown together it haste. The photography is high-quality, the recipes extremely tasteful and the section broad. I highly recommend this book for anybody who appreciates high-quality, healthy meals.

My cousin turned me on the Esselstyn lifestyle. Her husband, who has suffered from genetically high cholesterol, had seen many male family members die before their time due to heart disease. When vegetarianism and then veganism didn't solve his problem, they went hardcore into the Esselstyn lifestyle.
In 5 short months, my cousin (average size 12 American female) lost almost 30 pounds, much of it by foregoing the core of their vegan diet: olive oil, nuts, avocados, etc. Her husband also lost weight; better yet, his high cholesterol finally responded and is now in the excellent range.
My cousin then recommended the Esselstyn book to me, as my husband's cholesterol has stubbornly remained above 200, and he, too, has a history of heart disease in his immediate family. Though we believed we were already eating a healthy diet, several hours of reading through Esselstyn's findings soon proved we were wrong. We made a pact to try the diet for just 1 month and evaluate where we stood.
Well, 1 short month convinced us that this is the way to eat for life! We've now been following the program for 37 days, and the changes are already obvious. My husband has lost about 12 pounds and 3" in his waistline. He feels "lighter" and less bloated, and is "completely satisfied" (his words) by the wide variety of natural and delicious foods we eat.
As for me, I have lost about 9 pounds and a total of 12"; I will soon need new jeans! My mid-afternoon cravings are miraculously gone. And no one was more surprised than I to discover that we do not miss eating the staples of our previous diet, such as grilled salmon, eggs, olive oil, fat-free dairy products, dark chocolate, and an occasional 96% Laura's Lean sirloinburger. Another side benefit is that we are spending less at the grocery store!
If you're on the fence about this one, do what we did... try it for just 1 month (but be sure to give it 100%) and then make your decision.
