Never Be Fat Again: The 6-Week Cellular Solution to Permanently Break the Fat Cycle Review

Awesome! I give this book ten stars. Never Be Fat Again has got to be the best book on weight control ever written. I keep going on diets and the pounds keep coming back. For so many years I have tried to lose weight only to lose and regain the same 25 pounds over and over while gaining more weight every year. For the first time I now understand why diets don't work, and how to lose weight permanently. This book teaches you why you can't lose weight permanently by trying to lose weight. Excess weight is only a symptom of this disease, and you can't cure the disease by treating the symptom. The author, an MIT-trained scientist, identifies the causes of this disease, which, much to my surprise, include common environmental toxins. Armed with this knowledge, I am reversing the causes that created my weight in the first place. In just six weeks, I have lost 15 pounds without feeling deprived and eating as much as I like. In fact, I have more energy, sleep better and feel better than I have in years. All I did is cut out the processed foods and artificial sweeteners and get on the recommended supplement program. Never Be Fat Again is different from anything else out there on the market. It is clearly written and easy to read, but best of all, a scientifically-sound solution to excess weight. I highly recommend it. The chapter on sugar alone is worth the price of the book.

Never Be Fat Again: The 6-Week Cellular Solution to Permanently Break the Fat Cycle Overview

Fight Fat at Its TrueSource . . . Your Cells.

An M.I.T.-Trained Scientist Explains the ONE Secret You Need to Know to Lose Weight and Keep It Off.

Raymond Francis is the scientist people turn to when diets don't work. His groundbreaking approach treats excess weight for what it reall y is--a disease caused by malfunctioning cells. As Francis explains, many of the foods we eat every day, especially the 'health' and 'diet' ones we dutifully buy to lose weight, have the oppositeeffect . Full of hidden toxins and lacking nutrients, they actually poison your cells and alter your weight-control genes, causing your body to put on the pounds. Like he's done for thousands of other people, Raymond Francis can help you turn this fat cycle around and reclaim your waistline--and your health.

His simple yet scientifically supported plan will have you looking and feeling better than you have in years-- in just six weeks. You'll discover:

Which low-fat and no-fat products actually make you fatter

How one missing nutrient can signal your body to store fat

Which food additives are most toxic--and how to spot them on a label

The 'Big 4' worst foods to eat--with delicious and nutritious alternatives

How to sneak more fiber- and nutrient-rich foods into your day

Plus, delicious recipes for meals and snacks and week-by-week to-do lists to keep you on track

Your body already knows how to regulate its weight--you just need to give it a fighting chance. Now you can--for life.

Focaccia in the crockpot? Pimento cheezy dip? Recipes look easy, and low-fat healthy. I grow tired of slow-cooker recipes that require a saute prior to cooking. What's the point of the slow-cooker if I gotta cook before cooking? I ordered the book even though I'm in the middle of a move. I'll actually have to pack it in a box as soon as I get it. Maybe by winter I'll be settled in and get to try it out!

The Vegan Girl's Guide to Life Review

I just received this yesterday, so I haven't made any of the recipes yet. The book is stuffed full with timely, relevant info about leading a vegan lifestyle - vegan cooking/foods, vegan clothes and footwear, lists of vegan cosmetics companies on the Web, etc. Oh, and crafts, too! All presented in an attractive and fun format. I'm 44 and not all that hip, :), but I really like this book so far, a lot more than I thought I would. It's more like a little reference book for vegans. I wish I had this book 3 yrs ago when I first went vegan. The recipes look great, too, can't wait to try them. (Thank you for including a biscuits and gravy recipe!!)

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vegan Cooking Review

I love the style of cooking in this book: relatively simple recipes, most often with everyday ingredients; well written instructions; and a focus on whole foods (including the use of whole grain flours and unrefined sweeteners whenever possible). It is packed with recipes, 240 to be exact, so there options for new vegans (how to use tofu and seitan, for example), and vegan veterans who want wheat and soy-free recipes that creatively incorporate fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. That said those who are coming from fast food territory will still be welcomed by the author with some shortcut recipes for things like Tofu Dog Bites.
I have reviewed The Complete Idiot's Guide to Juicing (thumbs up) and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Total Nutrition (a disappointment), so I am well aware of the cutesy "Idiot's" format that some may love, some may feel neutral about, and some may be irritated by. At this point, I am pretty neutral, and able to look into the actual substance of the book.
The book starts with an informational section that is about 25 pages long, but it feels fairly complete for its purpose. Beverly touches on health needs and then dives into explaining milk and meat alternatives. Later in the cookbook is a chapter that is dedicated to making your own cheese and dairy alternatives.
Since I am already dairy-free, I chose to sample a recipe that also had a meat substitute vibe, the Savory Mushroom Sausages. The only changes I made were to cut the maple syrup in half (down to 1 ½ teaspoons) and increase the salt by ¼ teaspoon, as we aren't fans of the sweet flavor that many breakfast sausages have. They were awesome! I actually preferred the leftovers, after chilling overnight, as it really gave the various flavors time to meld. This was a soy-free and optional gluten-free recipe too!
I bake my own granola, so I was excited to trial the Vanilla Nut Granola recipe. It used a very different mix of spices, extracts, nuts, and seeds from my standard recipe. I really enjoyed the subtle sweetness and the very nutty tasting blend. All of Beverly's recipes are very easy to customize, so on the next go there are a few personal touches I will introduce. I think swapping the maple syrup for agave (which is half the price in my neck of the woods), and leaving out the pecans (which tended to burn easily) would make it an ideal blend for my household, adding just a slight touch of additional sweetness. Also, she ingeniously uses a blend of oil and water to keep the granola low fat, but we aren't calorie counters around here, so I will probably use all oil next time for a firmer crunch.
I loved the Carrot-Cashew Butter, a simple and thick spread with a light natural sweetness from the two main ingredients. I was also smitten by the Low Fat Miso Ginger Dressing. It was only my second time using miso, and the experience prior left me with a bad taste in my mouth, literally, but Beverly nailed it in the sweet, ginger-rich condiment.
This is definitely a cookbook that will get some mileage in my kitchen. Recipes that are next up on my list include the Maple Pecan Oatmeal Scones (made with rolled oats!), the Thai Peanut Sauce (I can never get enough of that stuff), the Raw Cheddar Cheese Spread (soy-free), the Raw ABC Nut Milk, the Red Lentil Bologneses (I am on a lentil kick), and the Blueberry Corncakes (a twist on traditional pancakes). But don't stop with my selections, there really are tons of different recipes to pick from in this one, from "Decadent Desserts" to "Marvelous Main Dishes."

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vegan Cooking Overview

Delicious recipes for the growing vegan lifestyle. There are so many reasons to go vegan—health and nutrition, weight loss, green and sustainable living, and prevention of cruelty to animals. With over 200 mouth-watering recipes and tips for converting meat- and dairybased dishes into vegan ones, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vegan Cooking will help readers enjoy a healthy vegan diet without sacrificing taste.

Thrive Foods: 200 Plant-Based Recipes for Peak Health Review

Brazier is an innovator: he formulated his now famous Vega plant-based protein shake at age 15; reinvented himself from a champion elite athlete to a nutrition and fitness expert; and then a best-selling author and public speaker. And this 3rd book in the Thrive Series does not disappoint and shows why he is a game-changer.
He introduces a breakthrough concept called Nutrient-to-Resource Ratio which ties nutrition, fitness and the environment together (you read it here first), and clearly illustrates how one seemingly small buying decision can have an industry changing effect, and potentially tip our food habits in a massive way.
Imagine you are in your favorite grocery store and as you check out food labels, you do not only see the amount of calories, but also the amount of nutrients and the environment resources used to produce that food. What a shock to find out that it takes 2900 times MORE land to produce the EQUAL amount of micronutrients from a pound of beef than from kale! Wouldn't you think twice about having steak for dinner? To take it a step further, as we start comparing brands to see which are more responsible than others, companies will start changing the way they do their business to meet the needs of the market place, and it is our buying power that will drive what they offer moving forward.
Even if you have not gotten into the plant-based lifestyle yet, are curious about it or in the process of transitioning, you will find that this is not one of those highly theoretical and abstract books - it is a very practical one infused with humor and fun examples which make the ideas come to life.
What's more, there's an entire section dedicated to delish thrive foods recipes that some of the most cultured and pickiest palets have concocted - a great toolkit to whip up Zagat-worthy menus we can impress our family and friends with. And they will never look at plant-based foods the same way again!
Who says we can't have it all? Being green inside and out has never been this empowering and exciting!

Thrive Foods: 200 Plant-Based Recipes for Peak Health Overview

Building upon thestress-reducing, health-boosting nutritional philosophy introduced in hisacclaimed vegan nutrition guide Thrive, professional Ironman triathlete BrendanBrazier now turns his attention to your dinner plate (breakfast bowl and lunchtray too). Eat Vegan on $4.00 a Day: A Game Plan for the Budget Conscious Cook Review

As the administrator of a vegetarian/vegan nonprofit organization and someone who runs several large vegetarian and vegan pages on Facebook, I am often asked for recommendations of good cookbooks and other vegan books by members. Many people want to cook healthy meals for themselves and their families but feel constrained by their tight budgets.
EAT VEGAN ON $4.00 A DAY: A GAME PLAN FOR THE BUDGET CONSCIOUS COOK is a book I can confidently recommend with pleasure because I know that it will be extremely useful to readers. The author guides the reader step-by-step in learning to shop wisely and plan great meals (recipes included!)that don't feel like budget meals at all.
I highly recommend EAT VEGAN ON $4.00 A DAY to anyone, vegan or not, who is interested in creating healthy meals on a budget and in learning about the benefits of the healthy, cruelty-free vegan way of eating. I didn't get my copy through Amazon but wherever you get it from, this book will pay for itself thousands of times over as you learn how to eat well for much less money.

Peas and Thank You: Simple Meatless Meals the Whole Family Will Love Review

Let me start out by saying that I'm 23, have no children, and only found Mama Pea's blog after the book was released, three facts which undoubtedly influence my review. Additionally, I was a bit hesitant to order the book because I struggled to find a review that didn't begin with, "I found Mama Pea's blog x months/years ago" and knew that these were fans doing what we do best: supporting their champion. I understand and respect this but it does make it hard to find a balanced review. That is what I hope to offer here.Things I liked:
-The index which is BY ingredient. This is time-consuming for the author but oh-so-helpful to the reader when they have x, y, or z going bad and need to use it STAT!
-The pictures of her food are beautiful and I love that there is one for almost every recipe.
-The glossary at the beginning of the book. It super useful, especially if you are new to the world of vegan/veg cooking. I especially liked her inclusion of the Dirty Dozen although I would have liked a note about how this changes every year.
-Every. single. soup. recipe. I'm kind of obsessed.
-The twists she put on vegan classics (e.g. Mini Tofu Frittatas, lentil meatballs, etc).
-Mama Pea offers serving suggestions for different recipes.

Things I didn't like:
-The heavy reliance on processed foods. Given Mama Pea's disdain for the processed foods she gave up, this was a HUGE disappointment and the biggest factor in my rating. Earth Balance, Lightlife products, Tofutti, Veganaise...they are not only present (which is to be expected) but used often. While the book does not claim to be a whole foods cookbook, Mama Pea makes it very clear that she doesn't like non-vegan processed foods. Furthermore, these products are rather expensive while their homemade counterparts (made of beans, tofu, etc) are much cheaper.
-Sugar, agave, and more sugar. Many of the recipes had a lot of added sugar and/or called for agave, another surprise since a) both of these products are pretty processed and b) there is a large body of research regarding their negative health effects. To be fair, there are about equally as many recipes that deem sweetener "optional" but I was not expecting to see it on so many pages.
-Mama Pea's focus on appearance. My favorite story was with Teriyaki tofu when Mama Pea talks about letting her curly hair go. The picture that accompanies it is the most beautiful one in the entire book and I wish this theme of self acceptance (rather than taming the wild curly beast or harping on Pea Daddy) wound its way more so through the book. Things I'm on the fence about:
-The stories. Some were frigging hysterical. Others, completely heartwarming. And others...distracting. I would have liked more recipes and less stories or at least shorter ones.
-The family photos. Part of me found them heartwarming and part of me thought there were too many for safety's sake more than anything. I would have preferred less, as cute as Gigi and Lulu are.
-The desire to not identify as vegan. On one hand I get it (the vegan community can be very judgmental, it allows her to appeal to a wider customer base, it is less intimidating for those who aren't vegan, etc) and on the other I just don't (she cooks vegan recipes and the vegan community could use another wonderful, welcoming voice). I totally respect her decision and while this did not directly affect my rating I have no doubt it will surprise others who are unfamiliar with her blog.
-The use of the word "simple". I felt some recipes were ridiculously simple and others were rather time-consuming and more complicated, especially the baked goods. Marinating tofu for an hour isn't a complicated task but simple, to me at least, implies easy-to-find ingredients (most are, some are a bit more foreign or expensive), quick preparation, simple preparation techniques, and easy instructions. Her recipes were about 50/50 I felt.Overall:
While I can't say that I love the book or that it'll be my new go-to, there are certainly a number of recipes that caught my eye for their novelty and interesting characteristics. If sugar and processed foods had been less prevalent, this would have easily received another star or two. If those aren't things you worry about, and especially if you have kids, this is a great cookbook for you. Otherwise, I'd say to keep looking.

Eating Animals Review

The buzz about this book was so incredible I had to get my hands on an advanced copy. The book is like nothing else ever written on the food industry. It reads like a novel, is funny, incredibly well documented, and lets factory farmers and animal activists speak in their own words. I've read a lot of books on the food industry and this is by far the best. It makes other writers, even Michael Pollan, look a bit timid. Foer never preaches. He shares his own beliefs and asks us to live by our own standards, not his. Foer reveals a lot of personal information here and, since this is his first nonfiction book, it its especially interesting for readers of his previous books to see some of the fact behind his fiction. The material about his grandmother and how she survived the holocaust is really powerful. The stuff about his dog George (Foer makes a mock case for eating dogs) is hilarious. His storytelling is so compelling that you hardly realize how much information he's conveying (there are 60 pages of notes documenting his sources, but the text itself is uncluttered by footnotes). Another unique thing about this book is that Foer actually sneaks into a factory farm in the middle of the night... Eating Animals is a serious book that could change the way you live. But what's most impressive about it is that it is also fun to read, which is exactly what we need on a hot button topic like the contemporary food industry.

Appetite for Reduction: 125 Fast and Filling Low-Fat Vegan Recipes Review

I like "Appetite for Reduction" because the author gives nutrition info for each recipe which is a first and unlike her other books. It is also a more health conscious collection of recipes and is exactly what I've been waiting for. I own all of Isa's & Terry's other books and I guess I would consider myself a fan by now. I usually stick to a healthy and nutritious diet under a certain number of calories per day, and I had to choose carefully which recipes I'm making in their previous books. But looking through "Appetite for Reduction," there really are no questionable recipes for those who wish to eat healthy. Everything is healthy here, and it doesn't skimp on flavor at all. I'm marinating the tofu from one of the new recipes right now...Masala Baked Tofu. Very simple and I can't wait to taste it!

Appetite for Reduction: 125 Fast and Filling Low-Fat Vegan Recipes Overview

This is not your mother's low-fat cookbook. There's no foolish tricks, no bizarre concoctions, no chemicals, no frozen meals…no fake anything! Appetite for Reduction means cooking with real food, for real life. (Skimpy portions need not apply.)

The Happy Herbivore Cookbook: Over 175 Delicious Fat-Free and Low-Fat Vegan Recipes Review

Meeting Lindsay on Twitter shortly after deciding to go Vegan was one of the best things that ever happened to me and I was really excited when Lindsay chose me to be one of her testers for this cookbook. Newly vegan I wasn't sure where to start. Lindsay introduced me to new foods with her creative, easy, few ingredient recipes.
I thought Chickpeas were something you sprinkled on salads at the salad bar but Lindsay has some really tasty recipes with them. I used to make Tofu Scramble with tofu, oil and a box mix. No oil, some tofu and a few spices add up to the best Tofu Scramble I've ever had. Make French Toast without eggs? Lindsay does and it is better than the real thing. Home fries without the fat? Lindsay has it! The BBQ Chop Wrap is one of my favorite all time recipes. I make the single serving brownie almost every week! And don't get me started on her Pumpkin Pie...
Recently I discovered that I can't tolerate Gluten and also had to cut back on Soy - Lindsay's book has many recipes that I enjoy.
Giving up all the fat for flavorful food cleared up my skin and helped me lose weight while feeling good.
I highly recommend Lindsay's book for anyone who enjoys food.

Green Smoothie Revolution: The Radical Leap Towards Natural Health Review

I loved Michael Pollan's book "In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto" in which he summed up his research into what we should really be eating by saying "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." I then thought, O-K, that's great advice but how do I do that? Salads?
Victoria Boutenko's book answers my question so completely that you would think that she was wondering the same thing. Many of the plants that are the healthiest for you (the dark green types) are difficult to eat raw in any meaningful quantity; kale, mustard greens, spinach, collard greens, etc. This is why so many people either cook them to death or smoother them with high calorie dressings. The Green Smoothie Revolution book showed me how I could add all of things that I believe are healthy for us (leaves, fruit, and berries) to my diet in an easy and fun way.
I was introduced to the Green Smoothie by a friend who had been eating this way for a while. I have to admit that when I made my first one I looked at it and said "Really?" It looked like something that Yoda, the swamp dwelling Jedi master from the Star Wars movies, would eat. Green, thick and kind of bubbling. I pride myself on my cooking abilities, especially in making a dish look appetizing by skillful plating. This did not look good; as a matter of fact my other friends used quite a few "colorful" expressions to describe my concoctions, none of which are appropriate here. The taste however is an entirely different matter. The simple blend of bananas, strawberries and kale was sweet, earthy and fresh. I was hooked!
In addition to the wonderful recipes for green smoothies (with alluring names such as "Hawaiian Hibiscus", "The Laughing Gorilla" and "Green Monkey Face") the book also offers moving testimonials and, most importantly, sage advice from Mrs. Boutenko. I have grown to really enjoy mustard greens as a part of my smoothie meals but she gives a great reason to "rotate" your choice of greens. It seems many plants have ingredients in them (including alkaloids) that could become slightly toxic if eaten in large quantities in order to encourage animals to vary their diet so that the plant would not be eaten to extinction. By regularly changing my choice of greens I can avoid this problem as each plant has a different chemical make-up. Another thing that surprised me is that pets enjoy this type of food as much as people do.
I will have to admit that I am not planning to eat 100% raw foods. I believe that humans are omnivores and that a varied diet is a good thing. However, I feel much better now that I have made my daily Green Smoothie my major meal of the day. I still enjoy my cheeses, breads, butter (I LOVE good, cultured Vermont butter) and meat, but I am eating much less of each of them. Thanks to a great friend and this book I have finally learned a practical way to "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook Review

First off, the food in this book is amazing. Vegan With a Vengeance was super great, but this is the friggin' BOMB!
Aside from the incredible food, the product description doesn't mention that the first part of the book is a great (and funny) read about HOW to cut and prepare different vegetables, how to cook different grains, etc...for someone like me, pretty invaluable stuff. Also cool if you're getting this for your "weird" vegan kid that is just learning to cook.
Also,, the icons are a big help (an icon tells you if you can make the meal under 45 min -or way less, another icon tells you if you can find everything at your regular Vons-type market, if there's soy, etc...)
The other review made a comment about the title, which I think is total genius. Then again, I get the HP Lovecraft/Evil Dead reference. What else could you call the "ultimate vegan cookbook" besides the "Veganomicon"??
Not only does this book have great recipes, but it will totally add ideas to your cooking arsenal. After making the "Black Bean Burgers", I am never buying packaged veggie burgers again!
p.s. do yourself a favor and make the "Leek and Bean Cassoulet with Biscuits".

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Review

My cousin turned me on the Esselstyn lifestyle. Her husband, who has suffered from genetically high cholesterol, had seen many male family members die before their time due to heart disease. When vegetarianism and then veganism didn't solve his problem, they went hardcore into the Esselstyn lifestyle.
In 5 short months, my cousin (average size 12 American female) lost almost 30 pounds, much of it by foregoing the core of their vegan diet: olive oil, nuts, avocados, etc. Her husband also lost weight; better yet, his high cholesterol finally responded and is now in the excellent range.
My cousin then recommended the Esselstyn book to me, as my husband's cholesterol has stubbornly remained above 200, and he, too, has a history of heart disease in his immediate family. Though we believed we were already eating a healthy diet, several hours of reading through Esselstyn's findings soon proved we were wrong. We made a pact to try the diet for just 1 month and evaluate where we stood.
Well, 1 short month convinced us that this is the way to eat for life! We've now been following the program for 37 days, and the changes are already obvious. My husband has lost about 12 pounds and 3" in his waistline. He feels "lighter" and less bloated, and is "completely satisfied" (his words) by the wide variety of natural and delicious foods we eat.
As for me, I have lost about 9 pounds and a total of 12"; I will soon need new jeans! My mid-afternoon cravings are miraculously gone. And no one was more surprised than I to discover that we do not miss eating the staples of our previous diet, such as grilled salmon, eggs, olive oil, fat-free dairy products, dark chocolate, and an occasional 96% Laura's Lean sirloinburger. Another side benefit is that we are spending less at the grocery store!
If you're on the fence about this one, do what we did... try it for just 1 month (but be sure to give it 100%) and then make your decision.

How to Cook Everything Vegetarian: Simple Meatless Recipes for Great Food Review

Let me start by saying I'm a busy working mom of two. I grew up eating Hamburger Helper and hot dogs, so I didn't learn to cook until I was an adult. My dad's had triple bypass and my mom's having gastric bypass, so we're trying to learn from their mistakes and eat not entirely vegetarian, but definitely a more plant-based diet. I'm sure all this sounds familiar to a lot of people!
How to Cook Everything Vegetarian is exactly the cookbook I've been trying to find for a long time. It has the simple, everyday recipes that I sometimes need, combined with a LOT of wonderful vegetarian dishes from ordinary supermarket ingredients. How about Peanut Soup, Senegalese Style? Or Korean-Style Noodles in Cool Bean Broth (in less than 20 minutes for when the kids are whining for dinner) Mustard Cheese Fondue?
This book is written in Bittman's typical `theme and variations' style, with a basic recipe (like for waffles) and then a sidebar or list following the recipe that gives variations (like a list of things you can add to waffles for flavoring). The great thing about this is that it means you rarely have to reject a recipe because you don't have the exact ingredients, just go with a variant. The only quibble I have with it is, it's sometimes difficult to keep track of what you are supposed to sub out & sub back in when you have a crying toddler on your ankle.
A basic cookbook should also walk you through basic techniques and ingredients. I was a little surprised to see the vegetables chapter was nearly 200 pages. Then I looked through it and realized a lot of that is guidance on how to select and prep the various vegetables. It's also helpful that he includes substitution suggestions - I may be out of broccoli, but if I can make the same recipe with green beans, then I can forgo the trip to the store one more day.
Another nice thing about this cookbook is, unlike most vegetarian cookbooks I have seen, it doesn't rely heavily on unusual ingredients or meat substitutes. It seems like there has to be a happy medium between burgers & fries on one hand and stuff you've never seen before. Surely we can make a healthy diet based on basic veggies, fruit, grains, and legumes, and that's JUST what this book focuses on.
But it doesn't matter how great the book is if the recipes aren't good! So I tried a few. The Spicy Autumn Veggie Burgers (we made less spicy for the kids) were terrific with a dollop of peach chutney, although the kids preferred ketchup. I was pleased at how quickly they came together too. The Glazed Carrot Soup the kids ate without any complaint at all. And oh my the Apple "Fries"!!!!
Because I'm sure people are wondering - yes, he has another cookbook called How to Cook Everything: Vegetarian that came out several years ago. This is NOT just a remake of that slim volume. This is a completely new book. (Why his publishers wanted to do two books with titles the same except for a colon I'll never know.) There's no exact overlap with How to Cook Everything, that I saw - even for recipes like Waldorf Salad, that are essentially the same in both books, there is some slight variation and different text that shows that this was re-written, not just a cut-and-paste job.
In short, I'm very happy with it. I've cooked out of it every day since I got it and I'm sure this will be one of my `go-to' cookbooks for years to come.

The Engine 2 Diet: The Texas Firefighter's 28-Day Save-Your-Life Plan that Lowers Cholesterol and Burns Away the Pounds Review

I have been eating the Engine 2 diet for five months. I've lost 35 LBS. My cholesterol dropped over 60 points. This was all after a meeting with a doctor who told me my cholesterol would only be slightly lowered by changing my diet.
I had the good fortune to get a head start on the rest of the world by meeting Rip in person. He is one of the good guys. I have shared countless 'plant-strong' meals with Rip over the last five months. He lives and breathes this diet every single day.
This is the first time in my life I have practiced any discipline with my diet. It's important to note changing my diet was not easy at first. The book remains an invaluable tool that guides me through the process of choosing the right ingredients at the grocery store - which is over half the battle. I have to set myself up for a win before the hunger sets in (rhyme). It also provides a nice array of fast recipes (tackle the lasagna later in the diet - it takes a bit of work).
Eating out is tough on this diet. You will find the vast majority of restaurants are not run by people who want you to live a long, healthy, balanced life (not yet anyway). I would suggest forgoing the restaurant scene while you find your bearings. I've certainly saved a fair amount of money cooking my own lunch and dinner - and it's not that I don't go out to eat - it's just less often.
Rip relates the detailed science behind this way of eating in terms all of us can understand. It's important to note he was raised in the household of a plant-devouring cardiologist - Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Rip's data and experience driven understanding of how our bodies react when fed a plant based diet is proof that this IS NOT another fools errand for all of us looking to lose weight and return our bodies to health. It is a diet of the truth. What would you expect from a firefighter?
Stick to it for 28 days. Get some blood work done before and after. I've been able to watch twenty or so men and women start the Engine 2 diet. I can say with certainty that the average person will see dramatic numbers change with their cholesterol. Everyone will lose weight. We will all feel better and ready to take on this new uncertain world.
Best of luck to everyone who wants to live a longer more comfortable life.

The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet Review

I got interested in reading The Kind Diet soon after reading the book written by Jonathan Safran Foer titled "Eating Animals". Foer really made me think and I decided to research the idea o vegan living. In the chapter about "Nasty Foods" Alicia Siverstone's observations about meat industry were in line with those of Mr. Foer. And she does a good job of backing her statements with well-conducted studies from reputable sources.
According to Alicia, in addition to meat, Nasty Foods include also dairy, refined sugar, and processed foods. These are the foods that we have to avoid in our daily diet. However, she realizes that it is very hard, if not impossible, for most people to just drop their normal nutritional habits and go totally vegan from one day to another. Therefore she suggests three levels of changing into Living in the Kind Life - from Flirting, via Going Vegan, to Becoming a Superhero.
Alicia insists that by eliminate harmful foods like meat, dairy, refined sugar and processed products, and enjoying an endless variety of deeply nourishing grains, vegetables and other delectable whole foods, you will live in agreement with nature and get rid of obesity problem that plagues the modern societies. By changing your eating habits and becoming vegan you will say good-bye to dieting once for all. And that's while enjoying "irresistibly sweet treats, you can eat every single day, forever."
I recently verified Alicia's statement on my recent trip to Central Europe. I discovered a restaurant chain called "Green Wave" that was serving plant foods only. Throughout the whole week I was consuming a variety of delicious meals not even once missing my traditional North American Big Burger.
By the end of the book Alicia provided some good (and some not so good) recipes of vegan meals. I suggest trying most of them to decide which ones suit you best. Keep in mind that you need to eat what's indigenous to the area to avoid stressing your body. This isn't a totally novel idea. The author of a great health/longevity book titled "Live 150 Years - Your Body Maintenance Handbook" is also a great proponent of living in agreement with nature and eating indigenous foods. If you check this book out, make sure to also read the chapters about obesity causes, and proper food combination.
TO SUMMARIZE: Plant-based diet is just about the greenest thing you can do. It requires less fuel, water, and other precious resources. It can also be the secret to your health, slim physique and radiant beauty. Enjoy the ride.

The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet Overview

In The Kind Diet, actress, activist, and committed conservationist Alicia Silverstone shares the insights that encouraged her to swear off meat and dairy forever, and outlines the spectacular benefits of adopting a plant-based diet, from effortless weight loss to clear skin, off-the-chart energy, and smooth digestion. She explains how meat, fish, milk, and cheese-the very foods we've been taught to regard as the cornerstone of good nutrition-are actually the culprits behind escalating rates of disease and the cause of dire, potentially permanent damage to our ecology. Yet going meat- and dairy-free doesn't mean suffering deprivation; to the contrary, The Kind Diet introduces irresistibly delicious food that satisfies on every level-it even includes amazing desserts to keep the most stubborn sweet tooth happy. Alicia also addresses the nutritional concerns faced by many who are new to a plant-based diet, and shows how to cover every nutritional base, from protein to calcium and beyond. Alicia knows that changing life-long dietary habits is a process, and that each person progresses at a different pace. For that reason, The Kind Diet encompasses 3 separate levels, from Flirting to Superhero. Flirts learn to dip a toe into the vegan pool, reducing their meat-eating and swapping out a few key foods for plant-based substitutes to see quickly how even small changes can reap big results. Vegans get to experience the life-altering effects of forgoing animal-products entirely, while still enjoying many convenience foods and meat substitutes in addition to the wonderful grains, vegetables and fruits that form the core of that diet. True enlightenment comes with the Superhero program, based on the principles of macrobiotics and built on a foundation of whole grains, vegetables, and other yummy foods that Alicia describes in detail. Whether your goal is to drop a few pounds, boost your energy and metabolism, or simply save the world, Alicia provides the encouragement, the information, and the tools you need to make the transition to a plant-based diet deliciously empowering.

Forks Over Knives: The Plant-Based Way to Health Review

The book "Forks Over Knives" does a wonderful job of performing two disparate tasks:
It provides concise explanations of why a whole-foods, plant-based diet is healthiest for people, the planet, and the animals, and
It offers a wide range of amazing recipes to help people get started.
The editor pairs these tasks to perform one goal: to help people live healthier lives through their food choices.
The book does this in three parts: (i) why a plant-based diet is best for your health, the planet, and the animals (37 pages); (ii) basic facts on plant-based foods (19 pages), and (iii) recipes (133 pages). While the bulk of the book is for recipes, there is a lot of powerful information in the first two parts that has appeal for anyone from the newcomer to the most informed, with topics as diverse as the environmental impact of food choices to nutrition labels. Even after having read literally dozens of books on plant-based foods and having finished Campbell's eCornell course in plant-based nutrition, I became more informed after reading the first two parts. The third part is filled with tempting recipes from some of the top plant-based chefs who refuse to compromise on health to sell meals.
The writing style is, for lack of a better word, "comfortable". You can almost imagine yourself having a casual discussion with 11 experts on healthy eating, with insights that would surprise your general practitioner, but with language suitable for the layperson.
My only qualms with the book are with the image quality of the graphs and people, which are technically disappointing, although still discernable, and with the arrangement of the bios, which seems out of order with their contributions.
As a result of the dual tasks, some of the Amazon reviewers were negative. I've summarized them here, along with some counterpoints:
Claim: The educational part of the book was too concise and contained bios
If you are interested only in Dr. Esselstyn's work, try Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure. For more on Campbell's work, turn to The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health. For the impact of our food choices on the environment or animals, there are hundreds of books that describe the effects in chilling detail. This book is not the most comprehensive, authoritative guide on any one of those subjects, but it is a very readable and compelling guide on what is arguably the most important topic for most readers: healthy eating. And it holds something for every nutritionist I've ever met, as well as for the overweight Wal-Mart shopper whose cart is filled with chips and soda, or laboratory-manufactured foods from aisle 17. I have yet to find a book that does a better job of balancing the tasks of enlightening readers and facilitating changes in diet.
The book does offer bios on the people who are trying to help us live more healthy lives. At first, I thought that this was a bit too much of a stretch for an already ambitious book...if I read a book on yoga, I'm not necessarily interested in the backgrounds of the leading proponents of yoga. But here I think the bios are justified because they offer a much needed perspective. The bio on T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., explains how he grew up on a dairy farm and was preparing to continue working with animal-based foods, how he discovered that animal protein was a problem rather than a solution to health woes, and then how certain factions in the food industry tried to smear him to stop him from sharing his findings. Dr. Neal Barnard found that the ribs on his cafeteria tray looked and smelled eerily similar to the ribs he had just examined from a human cadaver, which led him to think differently about food. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn tells of how he saved cardiovascular patients who had been told to "go home and prepare for death". I know of dozens of people with cardiovascular problems and one person who was also told to give up hope, so this latter bio may serve as a wakeup call where all else has failed. Collectively, these bios show how the leaders in the field came to the same conclusions from different perspectives, in spite of the traditional food and health industry pressures and tactics.
Claim: The book offered nothing that couldn't be found on the Internet.
I've been a student of plant-based nutrition for 10 years and I've read everything I can on the topic, yet I found pieces here I'd never seen before: Bios that contain insights obviously drawn out from first-hand interviews with the subjects; success stories from people who chose to adopt this healthier approach to eating; a very concise and thoughtful summary which compares whole, plant-based foods to animal products (styled like black box warning labels for food), and some great recipes from leading chefs.
Claim: The book contained no bibliography and few footnotes.
This comment, especially when juxtaposed with the above comment, shows the difficulty in pairing disparate tasks: it's impossible to please everyone. If everything could be found on the Internet, why would someone need a bibliography and dozens of footnotes? Actually, there is a bibliography--called a "bookshelf" on page 199, as well as a list of online references on page 198. There are few footnotes, which will disappoint the purist, but this is a guide, not the definitive source on every topic covered.
Now, a comment on some of the "reviews": A review should summarize the content, offer a critical assessment (e.g., Was it noteworthy? Understandable? Persuasive?), and an argument as to why prospective readers might or might not enjoy the book. Some of the comments for this book are simply mean-spirited attacks on a book that aims to inform, persuade and help those who want to live longer, healthier lives in making better food choices--all for the low price of $6.40, or less than one-tenth the cost of a doctor's visit, where the topic of whole, plant-based foods will likely never come up. Such attacks are to be expected when someone challenges long-held, but unjustifiable beliefs with extensive clinical and epidemiological evidence. Still, more thoughtful reviews would benefit Amazon customers.
