Awesome! I give this book ten stars. Never Be Fat Again has got to be the best book on weight control ever written. I keep going on diets and the pounds keep coming back. For so many years I have tried to lose weight only to lose and regain the same 25 pounds over and over while gaining more weight every year. For the first time I now understand why diets don't work, and how to lose weight permanently. This book teaches you why you can't lose weight permanently by trying to lose weight. Excess weight is only a symptom of this disease, and you can't cure the disease by treating the symptom. The author, an MIT-trained scientist, identifies the causes of this disease, which, much to my surprise, include common environmental toxins. Armed with this knowledge, I am reversing the causes that created my weight in the first place. In just six weeks, I have lost 15 pounds without feeling deprived and eating as much as I like. In fact, I have more energy, sleep better and feel better than I have in years. All I did is cut out the processed foods and artificial sweeteners and get on the recommended supplement program. The reviewer from Philadelphia below misrepresents Eat To Live. As a physician myself, I am concerned that this misinformation may harm other people by preventing them from reading Dr. Fuhrman's important book - I am especially concerned about our American epidemic of obesity and diet-related diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Fuhrman presents the cure in his well-researched book. The reviewer (did this person read the book?) from Philadelphia states that Dr Fuhrman's recommendations allow no animal products when in fact Eat To Live is a diet-style, not a diet. It has no such rigid requirements. In his menu plans he gives 7 days of menu plans for those on a vegetarian version of the plan and 7 days on a non-vegetarian plan. Dr. Fuhrman also makes it clear that a diet rich in vegetables does not have to be all raw or exclude animal foods completely; it is flexible. As a physician, I have observed him in action with patients and he can modify recipes and menu plans to accommodate various tastes and food preferences. It is not an all or nothing plan. However, without reading Eat To Live, your future diet-style will be based on misinformation, not science. It takes experience, creativity and knowledge to make the healthiest way to eat taste favorable for many people. Some people will reject the idea of eating for health based on incomplete information and what they want to eat based on short term thinking (those french fries sound good), rather than enjoying truly more delicious foods that are actually healthful too. Just remember taste is learned and takes a few months to adjust and you can also learn to make healthy food taste great. I have observed that most people over time actually like the taste of this diet-style better then their prior one and love the fact they can eat as much as they want. You get to eat lots of food, not be hungry and get great results too. Get the book and see for yourself. I believe every person in America must read this information; it puts all controversy about diet to rest and may save your life.

T. Colin Campbell has made a career of challenging the conventional wisdom around nutrition, and this book is the culmination of his work. His integrity, brilliance, and unflinching courage shine through every page.
The main point of this book is that most nutritional studies that we hear about in the media are poorly constructed because of what the author terms "scientific reductionism." That is, they attempt to pin down the effects of a single nutrient in isolation from all other aspects of diet and lifestyle.
While this is the "gold standard" for clinical trials in the pharmaceutical world, it just doesn't work when it comes to nutrition. Given that the Western diet is extremely high fat and high protein compared to most of the rest of the world, studies that examine slight variations in this diet (i.e., adding a few grams of fiber or substituting skim milk for full fat milk) are like comparing the mortality rates of people who smoke five packs of cigarettes a day vs. people who smoke only 97 cigarettes a day.
Campbell's research, which he describes in a very accessible and engaging fashion, has two tremendous advantages over the typical nutritional study. First, there is the China Study itself - a massive series of snapshots of the relationship between diet and disease in over 100 villages all over China. The rates of disease differ greatly from region to region, and Campbell and his research partners (including some of the most distinguished scholars and epidemiologists in the world) carefully correlated these differences with the varying diets of the communities.
It's not lazy "survey research" either - the researchers don't rely on their subjects' memory to determine what they ate and drank. The researchers also observed shopping patterns and took blood samples to cross-validate all the data.
The second amazing part of Campbell's research method is his refusal to accept any finding without taking it back to his lab and finding out how exactly it works. In other words, we discover in The China Study not only in what way, but precisely how, the foods we eat can either promote or compromise our health.
The book is part intellectual biography / hero's journey (although Campbell is always wonderfully humble - there's no trace of self-congratulation, just a deep gratitude for what he has experienced), part nutrition guide (the most honest and unflinching one you'll ever read), and part expose. The final section leaves no sacred cow standing, and names names! From the food industry, to the government, to academia, Campbell calmly reports on a coverup of nutritional truth so widespread and insidious that all citizens should be enraged.
I have a PhD in health education and a Masters in Public Health - and I can honestly say that no book has shaken my worldview like this one. Anyone interested in health - their own, or that of their family, friends, or community - must read this book and share it. Campbell has started a revolution. Skip this work at your own peril.

Of all the anti-aging books I've seen, this is one of most laid back and entertaining. It's written by two guys. Harry, the doctor, covers the science aspects of aging, while the other guy, Chris, talks about applying the info.
The book is centered around "Harry's Rules." These are seven rules for the reader to follow. They include such things as "Quit eating crap" or "Exercise six days a week for the rest of your life." While they might seem to be basic pieces of information, they are sound advice and have some science behind them.
All-in-all, I found this to be a very informative and amusing book and I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for a book on aging. The realistic key here is not to go into things thinking you're going to STOP the aging process, rather think of SLOWING DOWN the aging process. Aging readers may also find Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff helpful as 54% of people over the age of 60 get a torn rotator cuff.

I bought Rocco's Now Eat This book last year. The recipes were so amazing that I started losing 3 pounds a week! The reason I could stay on this diet was because with Rocco's recipes, I felt like I was still eating my favorite foods - burgers, mac and cheese, fried chicken, brownies etc. I love that Rocco came out with Now Eat This Diet because it really helps me put together daily meal plans. No more guess work, I just simply combine what recipes I like best for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This book also has EVEN MORE recipes of my favorite comfort foods. There are a ton of photos in the book which come in handy when I am unsure whether I am making the dishes properly. The layout of the book is also good and very easy to follow. I'd say, overall, this book is even better than the last one.

Eat For Health makes more sense than any other eating plan I have ever read about and over the years I have read more than my share. Some time ago I read about Calorie Restriction and how it is indeed the only proven thing to extend the longevity on one's life. (See calorierestriction dot org.) It involves restricting the number of calories that one eats but it also means that the calories you eat MUST be nutritious calories. Dr. Fuhrman takes this even further or at least makes it simple to apply. Using the information in his book all you need to do is make sure your diet includes an abundance of these nutrient rich foods. There is no need to count calories. If you stop eating the Standard American Diet [SAD] and adopt this nutrient dense way of eating you will at least greatly reduce your chances of ever developing heart disease, cancer, autoimmune diseases and who knows what else and you will not be overweight or be doomed to living your final years in physical pain and suffering from conditions like arthritis and type 2 diabetes etc.
I am in my 60s and I am 5 ft. 11 in. tall. In January of 2009 I was 205 pounds and decided it was time to lose a few pounds. I switched from eating what I thought was a very healthy diet which included avoiding junk like MSG and high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils and included seafood and almost never any dairy or red meat or poultry, to eating strictly vegan. I cut out the seafood and the cheese and eggs. I lost 12 pounds but could not lose anymore. In June I decided to drink a lot of grapefruit juice and sometimes had nothing but grapefruit juice all day and sometimes I would have one vegetarian meal. I did this for a couple of weeks and lost another 12 pounds but I was hungry all the time. Then I read Dr. Fuhrman's book, Eat To Live, which is quite similar to Eat For Health. I started following it, eating the nutrient dense foods and one helping of beans/legumes a day and no more than one serving of grains/starch a day. I literally stuffed myself. I would spend my entire one-hour lunch at work eating. I don't drink fruit juice anymore. I eat the fruit instead and lot's of it. By the end of August I had lost another 12 pounds, getting my weight down to 169. When I started on this journey I never really expected to reach this point but when I saw how easy it had become there was no reason not to. I went from a 38 inch waste to a 32 inch waist. This information is the key to losing weight in a healthy manner and the key to keeping it off and living a healthy life free of disease. Here it is now December and I haven't yet had the cold that I normally come down with in October or November every year. I am sure eating right is contributing to this fact.
The nice thing about Eat For Health is that it offers the reader more options. It is designed into 4 phases so that you can stop at any phase you wish or can move from one phase to the next whenever you choose to at your own pace. You don't have to give up on animal foods entirely. This does not require being a vegetarian or being a vegan but it does require being a nutritarian and greatly limiting the animal foods that you eat.
Eat For Health is beyond calorie restriction, better than The Rave Diet and Life Style and and makes Fit For Life look archaic. Don't get me wrong those are good books in themselves but not as good as what Dr. Fuhrman delivers. Dr. Fuhrman IS a medical doctor and a former world class athlete. He lives by the information in his books as does his family. He has the scientific backing and studies that support his approach and he makes more sense than anyone else out there. This is pure logic people. Are your ready for it?
Get the hard copies of the books [It is a 2 book set] and get the audio CD to listen to. That's what I recommend and that's what I did.

While we appreciate that Mr. Bayan took the time to comment on our work, we are concerned that inaccurate statements he has made may discourage some people from making changes in diet and lifestyle that we have proven to be lifesaving.
For the past 24 years, the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine have conducted research scientifically proving, for the first time, that the progression of even severe coronary heart disease can begin to reverse by making comprehensive changes in diet and lifestyle, without drugs or surgery. These studies have been published in leading peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the AMA, The Lancet, the American Journal of Cardiology, New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, and others.
Mr. Bayan alleges that the diet we have proven to be so beneficial is "dangerous" for some patients because both HDL and LDL may decrease and triglycerides may increase. HDL and triglycerides are only potential risk factors for heart disease, they are not diseases. When we measured the actual severity of heart disease using state-of-the-art measures such as computer-analyzed coronary arteriography and cardiac PET scans, patients showed continued improvement over time, even in patients like Mr. Bayan whose HDL decreased or triglycerides increased. Also, cardiac events were 2.5 times lower in the group who followed the program compared to the control group who made more moderate changes in diet (30% fat, 200 mg cholesterol). [reference: JAMA. 1998;280:2001-2007.] Clearly, lowering HDL by changing diet did not harm these patients. LDL cholesterol decreased by an average of almost 40% during the first year, and none of the patients who adhered to the diet showed an increase in LDL.
As Dr. Connor wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine, "There are no data showing that the physiologic reduction of HDL cholesterol levels with a low-fat diet is detrimental. Diet-induced lowering of HDL cholesterol does not confer the same risk of atherosclerosis as do low HDL cholesterol levels in Americans consuming a high-fat diet." [ref: N Engl J Med. 1997;337(8).]
It is true that one can eat an unhealthful low-fat diet if it is high in simple carbohydrates such as sugar, white flour, alcohol, and many popular fat-free desserts. Such a diet may cause a shift to the more harmful pattern B LDL subclass that Mr. Bayan mentions.
But this is not the diet we recommend for reversing heart disease. Other studies have shown that a diet high in fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and other complex carbohydrates (which is the diet we recommend) actually cause a shift AWAY from the pattern B LDL subclass to more beneficial patterns [ref: Kenney JJ, et al. Very-low-fat diets do not necessarily promote small, dense LDL particles. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 1999;70(3):423-5.]
Patients whose triglycerides increase are counseled to be even more mindful in reducing their intake of simple carbohydrates and increasing their exercise. Also, for many years we have recommended that patients take 3 grams/day of fish oil, which also helps to lower triglycerides. In the Multicenter Lifestyle Demonstration Project, we found that triglyceride levels, which initially increased slightly but not significantly, then fell significantly in years two and three. [ref: American Journal of Cardiology. 1998;82:72T-76T.] Almost 80% of people who were eligible for bypass surgery or angioplasty were able to safely avoid it by making these diet and lifestyle changes instead.
We respect the work of Dr. Robert Superko and often refer patients to his lipid laboratory for testing. Again, we have found that patients with small dense LDL also show reversal of heart disease on the program recommend.
The program that we recommend includes a reversal diet for those with heart disease and the prevention diet for others. The prevention diet may be higher in fat and cholesterol than the reversal diet and is tailored to the needs of the individual rather than offering one diet for everyone. The prevention diet may include some oils, fish and other animal products for some people.
Switching from saturated fats to monosaturated fats is better, but for reversing heart disease or lowering cholesterol it is better to avoid all oils other than fish oils. Olive oil is 100% total fat and 14% saturated fat. The more olive oil you consume, the more saturated fat you consume, the higher your plasma cholesterol. The studies showing that olive oil lowers cholesterol are only when substituted in equal amounts for butter or oils that are higher in saturated fat. Also, olive oil has almost none of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.
The bottom line is this: patients in our studies with severe heart disease reported a 91% reduction in angina (chest pain) within one month, and most became pain-free. They not only felt better, they were better. We measured improved blood flow within one month as measured by thallium scans and radionuclide ventriculograms, reversal of coronary artery blockages (atherosclerosis) within one year, even more reversal after five years, and 2.5 times fewer cardiac events (e.g., heart attacks).
