Successful Coaching - 3rd Edition Review

This is THE best coaching book for beginner to intermediate coaches I have EVER read. I think so highly of this book that I feel all coaches should be handed a copy as soon as they sign up for a coaching job. This is the book that basically made me the coach I am today. When I first began coaching high school hockey, I sought coaching education in all the books I could find. But for a beginning coach, many of these books fell short with the simple fact that new coaches need to learn from the bottom up. This book not only remembers to teach you all aspects of coaching you will need to get started in coaching but hits on a lot of the aspects that you may not even have considered. This is the first book I read that hits upon the idea that coaching is more that X's and O's.Many coaching books fail to realize that organization is the key to successful coaching. Practice and season planning are covered in a way that a new coach can begin planning their season immediately.Physical conditioning planning and teaching plans are covered in a way that no matter what the sport is that you are coaching, you can apply the lessons taught. From how to make up your season outline to how to set and reach your team objectives are covered to the point where you can gain the confidence you need to succeed. But also covered are things such as how to avoid legal problems, how to deal with parents and how and when to run meetings with both parents and players. These are the very details that most hockey or coaching books seem to leave out. And these are the very things that all new coaches need to get information on BEFORE they begin. And after coaching for four years on the high school level, I have needed ALL of the information I gained from this book.I can not recommend this book enough. EVERY COACH IN EVERY SPORT SHOULD OWN IT.

Mind Gym : An Athlete's Guide to Inner Excellence Review

I have just about every book on the topic of sports performance.
I've read others that were more impactful and helpful.
Granted, this book is good if you're just looking for some inspiration that might eventually lead you to results. For immediate results to use on one's game, however, this book isn't it!
As another reviewer said, it's clumsily written. For my hard earned money, I'd like something that I can actually use on my game right away.
If you're a couch potato athlete that only watches a game, this book is probably good. My brother-in-law loves it. He's never played a sport in his life, but is a big fan. For competitive athletes who are more interested in RESULTS and can get their cliches from TV announcers, this book isn't for them.
I'd give it one star, but those who've met the guy seem to like him enough to log onto amazon and write a review. Nothing personal, but I can't give this anything like the rating the others did.

Mind Gym : An Athlete's Guide to Inner Excellence Overview

Foundations of Sport and Exercise Psychology Review

Perhaps I'm not being fair on discussing how this book is being organized since so many of the ideas overlap so heavily... Nonetheless, this book seems to have almost no logical organization. Sometimes, when I'm reading a chapter, I'll feel like I'm reading something straight out of the last chapter. Not to mention the hierarchy within a chapter is chaotic at best. The use of the same size, same bold font for every heading makes it feel more like a poorly made wikipedia page on the topic than a logical chapter presenting the information. For god's sakes, change the font to reflect the hierarchy of the chapter. I've never seen a textbook fail to do so so miserably.
On top of this, it often feels like the authors just "threw" as much information in on a given topic as they could. Reading the little bullet points every few pages seems to almost conflict with some of the things mentioned in the book.
All in all, this is a VERY frustrating book to read and if you aren't somewhat interested in the topic already, it will not be an easy read. I have never used a worse textbook in my studies and I am in my second year of university, having taken psychology and exercise physiology courses with a lot in common with the course I use this for now.
If there's a way to avoid using this book (note to professors), please spare your class. You might understand it fairly well but students with less knowledge in the field will find it ridiculously boring and overwhelming.

The Inner Game of Tennis: The Classic Guide to the Mental Side of Peak Performance Review

As most people can guess by the title, the "inner game" of tennis is the game that takes place iin the mind of the player and is played against barriers such as nervousness, self-doubt, etc.
To gain clarity on the mental problems in tennis, the book looks at the concepts of "Self 1" and "Self 2". Self 1 is the name that is given to the conscious ego-mind which likes the tell Self 2, you and your potential, how to hit the ball and play the game. Or, to put it another way, Self 1 is the "teller" and Self 2 the "doer". I found this to be an interesting idea, as we have all caught ourselves talking to ourselves or have seen others talking to themselves during a game. If you ask someone who they are talking to, they will usually say "I'm talking to myself." This, of course, implies that there are 2 "selves", "I" and "myself"- and so is born the idea of Self 1 and Self 2. Pretty astutue observation in my opinion.
Now according to the book, to achieve peak performance, the key is to resolve any lack of harmony between the two selves, as it is the contrary thinking of Self 1 which causes interference with the natural abilities of Self 2. This requires the learning of several inner skills, such as the art of letting go of self-judgements, letting Self 2 do the hitting, recognizing and trusting the natural learning process, and so on- which is what much of the books spends discussing.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who plays tennis (or any other sport for that matter) as it does a great job in dealing with the fact that many of our difficulties in tennis are indeed mental in origin. Other helpful books for tennis players I've come across include Treat Your Own Tennis Elbow.
