Bound by Law Review

I should start this with a caveat: I didn't read the first book of the series (didn't realize there was one), so perhaps I would have understood a bit more if I had.
The basic story line was interesting. The problem is, that it was hard to follow, even ignoring those parts that referred to the first book. The writing jumps back and forth between past and present (a couple of times in the middle of a hot scene, which I found pretty disconcerting) and several things are repeated two or three times, almost as if the writer had also track of what had already been said and what hadn't. I didn't find the trio terribly convincing, and certainly there was very little tension between Paulo and Styx; I would have expected, and the blurb implied, quite a bit more.
The plot evolution was also pretty poorly executed; threads were left hanging here, there and everywhere, and in certain places belief had to be completely suspended (e.g. one of the characters figures out where an assassin, who had been hunted for years, lives because his henchmen are apparently talking about it while they are beating him up).
I had hoped to read a thriller with a developing relationship in the background, or even a romance with a realistic adventure in the background. In the end, I don't think the book delivered on either.
