Excuses Begone: How to Change Lifelong, Self-Defeating Thinking Habits Review

I have read most of Wayne's books, and this was one of the better ones. I used a highlighter on many areas of the book: I love Wayne's style of intertwining great philosophical quotes, anecdotes and personal stories to illustrate his points.
The book starts out citing compelling science and studies, including Bruce Lipton's research proving that genes are far from destiny, and that our beliefs influence even our genes. This is truly the foundation for a "no excuses" paradigm. Wayne delves into the concept of memes, or mind viruses and explains how these are passed on to people like cold viruses.
Next, 18 typical excuses are presented (many of these solicited from his readers). It will be difficult, risky, take too long, create family drama; I don't deserve it; it's against my nature; I can't afford it (surely a popular one today!); no one will help me; it's not happened before; I'm not strong/smart enough; I'm too old/too young; the rules/laws won't let me; it's too big; I don't have the energy/time; it's in my family history; I'm afraid. I was disappointed that my favorite excuse "I'll do it later" wasn't listed, although it was addressed indirectly in various parts of the book, especially in the "commitment to overcoming the inertia" part.
The second section seven contains principles for overcoming excuses: awareness, alignment, now, contemplation (with a very powerful quote from Aristotle--"Contemplation is the highest form of activity"), willingness, passion and compassion.
The third section promotes a new way of viewing excuses, creating a paradigm shift. This includes asking yourself six questions, starting out with "Is it true?" Where did the excuse come from? What is the payoff?" These are very reminiscent of Bryon Katie except that instead of undoing beliefs, you are undoing excuses and eradicating them from your subconscious mind (which Wayne argues need not be beneath your consciousness, and in fact renames as the "habitual mind").
I see people all the time using these excuses to avoid eating a better diet of more raw foods: It will create family drama; I don't have the time to fix good food; I don't have the money to buy fresh produce." My father's excuse was, "I am too old." Unfortunately, he died of cancer two years after using that excuse!
I am confident that this book will inspire people to take a new look at their habitual mind patterns, breaking free to move on to their highest potential!

Excuses Begone: How to Change Lifelong, Self-Defeating Thinking Habits Overview

Within the pages of this transformational book, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer reveals how to change the self-defeating thinking patterns that have prevented you from living at the highest levels of success, happiness, and health. Even though you may know what to think, actually changing those thinking habits that have been with you since childhood might be somewhat challenging.
If I changed, it would create family dramas . . . I'm too old or too young . . . I'm far too busy and tired . . . I can't afford the things I truly want . . . It would be very difficult for me to do things differently . . . and I've always been this way . . . may all seem to be true, but they're in fact just excuses. So the business of modifying habituated thinking patterns really comes down to tossing out the same tired old excuses and examining your beliefs in a new and truthful light.
In this groundbreaking work, Wayne presents a compendium of conscious and subconscious crutches employed by virtually everyone, along with ways to cast them aside once and for all. You'll learn to apply specific questions to any excuse, and then proceed through the steps of a new paradigm. The old, habituated ways of thinking will melt away as you experience the absurdity of hanging on to them.
You'll ultimately realize that there are no excuses worth defending, ever, even if they've always been part of your life-and the joy of releasing them will resonate throughout your very being. When you eliminate the need to explain your shortcomings or failures, you'll awaken to the life of your dreams.

Excuses . . . Begone!

The Guru in You: A Personalized Program for Rejuvenating Your Body and Soul Review

Yogi Cameron is a gorgeous ex-model who has transitioned to teaching yoga and practicing ayurveda (which usually takes years to master and in which to qualify.) His clientele seems to be mainly female and wealthy and single--or rich and famous. He seems to be sincere, but the marketing machine here seems to be pushing his looks and charisma--makes one wonder about the actual spiritual depth of the guy, a subject he likes to talk about. There are SO many other, better, more complete yoga and ayurveda books out there. The core of his book offers a few simple yoga routines, some breathing, and some dietary advice based on dosha type, which can be had in any number of other books. Also, I fault the publisher for using very poor-quality paper and low-resolution photos--it's not a high end production by any means. If you're a Yogi Cameron fan, you'll enjoy the book as a keepsake or souvenir, and some might find some helpful beginning information. Of course I wouldn't turn down a personal session with the guy, but if you're serious, look elsewhere.

The Guru in You: A Personalized Program for Rejuvenating Your Body and Soul Overview

The Guru in You invites you to embark on a journey to reconnect with your body and discover its natural ability to heal. As the first male supermodel, Cameron Alborzian had a life that many dream of-traveling the globe, working with the most prestigious designers in the world, partying with celebrities, and appearing in major ad campaigns and cultural landmarks like Madonna's "Express Yourself" video. But his real achievement came when he decided to leave the material world of high fashion and investigate the ancient art of Ayurvedic healing. What he learned changed his life, and, after years of study, he now works with everyone from Hollywood celebrities to executives of international corporations to bring balance, improved health, and inner peace to their busy lives. The tools he provides for his clients are now available to all with The Guru in You.

Most of us will never have a live-in guru, but Yogi Cameron provides the next best thing: an easy-to-follow program, guiding you to better health and happiness. The Guru in You lays the foundation for change, helping us identify our unhealthy patterns and set our intentions. It then provides you with a customizable plan. Whatever your body type and temperament, Yogi Cameron offers diet, supplements, breathing exercises, and yoga tailored just for you. This is not a one-size-fits all program but an invitation to develop a practice that you'll take with you for the rest of your life.

Yogi Cameron teaches us the ancient wisdom that we all have the power to heal ourselves. By developing a practice that works for your individual needs, you will forever improve how you eat, sleep, work, and exercise.

Yogi Cameron invites us to discover what he has learned firsthand: the material world will not bring sustainable happiness, but we can all find joy if we pursue a meaningful path toward balancing our body and mind. With this book, you can be guided by the guru in you.

A Field Guide to Medicinal Plants and Herbs: Of Eastern and Central North America (Peterson Field Guide) Review

Here is everything that a field guide should be and contain--small enough to stick into a pocket but comprehensive, definitive, dependable and well-illustrated. Pictures, descriptions, locations, uses, warnings. Foster is not only an herbalist of the first rank but one of the finest plant photographers out there clicking. His gorgeous Healing Plants calendar is on my wall; the verdant photos provide daily pleasure. Herbal preparations as alternatives to synthetic drugs are increasingly chosen. St. John's Wort for depression, Saw Palmetto for prostate treatment, Goldenseal for a multitude of symptoms. Not typically thought of as herbs, trees are also a part of our living pharmacy and 66 are included here. Ginkgolides extracted from leaves of the Ginkgo tree (ginkgo biloba) are the best-selling herbal preparation in Europe. Aspirin derives from the willow. Amongst shrubs I learned that Hawthorn leaf and flower preparations are used in Germany to treat congestive heart failure, based on at least 14 controlled clinical studies. With increasing usage, many plants are in danger of being overharvested. Conservation is necessary to preserve a viable natural community of plants that can and may help alleviate human suffering. Stopping plant thieves is a law enforcement challenge but easy identification of plants may save others of us from bulldozing a patch of ginseng for a house site. It is noted that Pale Purple Coneflower (Echinacea pallida) "is common in eastern Kansas but it is very rare in western North Carolina at the eastern extreme of its range. The plant might be judiciously harvested in Kansas, but in North Carolina it should be left alone." More than just a field guide, Medicinal Plants and Herbs is an essential reference book for our personal library. The value of this big little book can hardly be overestimated.

I Can Do It 2012 Calendar: 366 Daily Affirmations Review

This is a book with the book-on-tape, read by the author, enclosed. I CAN DO IT is all about affirmations and changing your life with affirmations. The spoken word on this CD is incredibly powerful. Louise supportivly walks the reader (and listener) through a discussion on the usefulness of affirmations for several areas including health, wealth/prosperity, job happiness, relationships, self-esteem and stress. She then gives sample affirmations for each catagory. I listen to the CD when I drive, as suggested on the CD cover, and I feel empowered to create the life I want! I drive around saying affirations out loud, including "I am totally adequate for all situations", so empowering!

The Power of Prayer: Guidance, Prayers, and Wisdom for Listening to the Divine Review

Despite having produced the music for this series, as well as having been a part of Caroline's audience for the recording process,
I am still amazed when listening to Caroline speak as if it's the first time. Every word is a portal to the potential of stillness in each moment.
Caroline has often explained that she puts you in "slow motion" when she's doing a reading, and this alchemy is clearly in motion when she is teaching as well. What listeners wont know, is that many of us asked a series of questions and made comments about the topic of prayer before the red light went on, and of course Caroline ended up seamlessly addressing or answering us throughout her delivery.
What I love about Caroline, is what some others have been critical of, which is her fierce and passionate approach to translating life's challenges. We often like the idea of growing and learning, but when the more uncomfortable components come into play, people can quickly project an excuse onto someone or something - whether it's a teaching or a religion or something in between. My point here, is that Caroline gets right into the line of fire like a warrior of consciousness. I think this series, like her others, is an important contribution to self mastery.

The Power of Prayer: Guidance, Prayers, and Wisdom for Listening to the Divine Overview

"All prayers are heard and answered," says Caroline Myss. Can that be true? As you come to understand the original role of prayer in personal transformation, you begin to realize that it could be no other way. On The Power of Prayer, Caroline Myss invites you to experience prayer at its deepest and most profound level--as a direct channel into union with God. "When we pray from a place inner stillness, our thoughts and words become sacred," Myss explains, "and we can hear the answering call of heaven." Join her to begin a revolution in the way you pray, as you explore:

How and why we pray--moving beyond the stage of "petition prayer" to a place of true openness to guidance from a higher source
How humility allows us to bypass the ego and connect directly to the divine
The transformational journey--why a willingness to sacrifice the familiar and enter the unknown puts you on the path of grace
Prayers for healing, for the morning and evening, navigating difficult times, and expanding your capacity to act from a place of love
There comes a point in our lives when we are called to pray--when we see that our rational minds cannot make sense of the mystery of life and we realize that we need another way. WithThe Power of Prayer, Caroline Myss offers new insights into the most important tool available to us on our spiritual journey--and for calling upon the grace that will never fail to guide and shelter us.

Self-Esteem Affirmations Review

This subliminal affirmation tape is an excellent method for promoting self-esteem and confidence. One side of the tape is the sound of soft music accompanied by a calm woman's voice stating positive affirmations, such as "I feel good about my life & It is easy for me to stand up for myself". On the other side of the tape, there are hidden subliminal affirmations and soft music plays to promote relaxation. Just play it while your sleeping, when you wake up in the morning, you will notice a more positive mental outlook.

Self-Esteem Affirmations Overview

This CD contains a series of positive affirmations created and narrated by Louise L. Hay. Affirmations are like seeds. It takes time for them to germinate, take root, and grow. Life-changing and soul-satisfying benefits are possible by using this CD with determination and consistency. We recommend that you listen to this CD twice a day for at least 30 days. You can easily do this while you relax, work or sleep.

Personal Healing Review

Caroline Myss is very well known as a medical intuitive and lecturer on healing in general and practical applications of spiritual principles.
In this lecture, approximately 1 hour, she discusses a number of very accessible ideas on personal healing. The ideas, such as "live in the present time" and "forgive" and "retrive your spirit bartered to others" are practical and accessible.
While her other programs are more involved and lead to deeper work on her ideas, this program is an excellent introduction to MYSS.

Anatomy of the Spirit Review

In the last part of ANATOMY OF THE SPIRIT, Caroline Myss unites her discussion of three belief systems (Roman Catholic Sacraments, Kabbalah Tree of Life, and Hindu Chakras) within the concept of living in the present moment. Many who have trod the spiritual path Myss describes and faced the Three Big Crises - absence of meaning and purpose; strange new fears; and devotion to something greater than one's self - will appreciate her final words. Suffering produces spiritual rewards.
Not everyone will appreciate Myss' book. I would like to send the audio version to my 87-year old aunt who is devoutly Roman Catholic, but I don't think she would like it. My Southern Baptist aunt would probably disown me. My daughter would appreciate it - but she's a fan of Bishop Pike. For a change, Myss has written a book older folks will appreciate more than younger ones.
I know something about the sacraments having been raised with them. I've also acquired a great deal of knowledge about the Chakras in the past 40 years (via reading and Hindu friends). I have studied the Kabbalah (it is far more complex than Myss' book indicates). Like Joseph Campbell whom she apparently see as a model, Myss sees a larger truth underlying religious structures and/or tribal systems of belief.
Myss is billed as an expert on energy medicine. In the early 1980s, I had the pleasure and privilege of being in Louis Hay's home. I can testify that "whatever your mind can conceive and believe it will achieve." Whenever I have an ailment, I whip out Hays' healing books (Myss cites one of them). Healing takes many forms. Doctors mostly facilitate the process or mess it up. The power of positive thinking, prayer, the laying on of hands, and laughter all work to heal the body-mind-spirit. What Myss shares is not new, but if you haven't heard about it elsewhere you can learn more here.
This is a good book. I've heard, read, and/or experienced most of what Myss describes so I can testify to the truthfulness of it. If you are ready to move beyond tribal boundaries and become whole this may be the book for you.

Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips Review

As a cancer survivor, I wanted to like this book. I love the idea of a "hip" survival/inspirational guide for women. I am so glad that Kris Carr has dealt so well with a devastating diagnosis. This points to a true strength of spirit. I think the author's heart is in the right place, but something went wrong here. I didn't find this book hip, or funny. It struck a bad chord for me. When I had cancer I too was 31. I didn't go through a decision-making process about whether to tell my esthetician about my illness. I wasn't worried about getting my bikini area waxed. I didn't go on a "cancervation" with my "posse", because I was working to pay my bills and keep my health insurance. I didn't attend retreats and trainings and buy hundreds of dollars of goods from Whole Foods on shopping trips and make a documentary about myself. People deal with trauma and heal in different ways, and spending freely seems to have been beneficial to Kriss Carr's personal journey. Each woman featured in this book talks about her height and weight, and Kris Carr makes numerous references to her own weight and desire to weigh less. It seems the opposite of "empowering", and perhaps a bit disingenuous, for a woman who looks (at least in her photos) radiantly healthy, beautiful, stylish, and very thin to keep making references to desire for weighing less. I'd find it inspirational to hear things along the lines of "I used to worry about my weight before cancer, but since I've changed my diet and lifestyle, my body has changed and I'm very happy with it, I feel very comfortable in my own skin now" (or something like that). When I had cancer, I was more concerned with getting well than stepping on the scale. I'm well and healthy, now, my looks are something I pay attention to but emphasizing it in a book focused on cancer seems wrong. I can't pretend to know what it's like to have the disease that Kris Carr is living with. She seems to be doing something right - a lot of somethings. I respect this tremendously. I'd love to hear more about diet and exercise, more on inner process, less about numbers on the scale and appearance and the things that money can buy. Maybe focusing on this is meant to distract the mind, and I've missed the point!
